Liza's Accomplishments & Ongoing Work
As an incumbent County Commissioner with three+ years of governing experience, I have worked to lead with integrity, transparency, and deep respect for the people and land of Saguache County.
All accomplishments are ultimately the entire board's, as we act together.
Community Stewardship & Responsible Leadership: - Advancing housing solutions - carried on the work of Evan Samora with the funding and construction of the 32-unit Range View Housing Development - Working with the Board of County Commissioners and Hearth Design Build to construct a transitional home for DSS as well as six more workforce houses in Casita Park and possibly more in places like KV Estates if funding and partnerships are successful. - Updated land use regulations to better reflect community values, to steward the land and to manage changing pressures on our natural resources. - Strengthened 1041 solar development regulations and the six-county aquifer protections led by Commissioner McCracken and supported by myself and Commissioner Thompson in partnership with the SLV Council of Governments. - Champion of alternative and affordable sanitation and greywater methods appropriate for rural communities allowable under Regulations 43 and 86 - Helping establish Vista Grande Park in partnership with the Town of Saguache and SLV Great Outdoors - Spearheaded a full reset and ongoing compliance restoration at the Department of Social Services through new leadership - Am a liaison to emergency management and wildfire mitigation efforts with our Office of Emergency Management - Supporting economic development by bringing Saguache County Sustainable Environment and Economic Development on as a county partner - Advocated for Secure Rural Schools funding in Washington, D.C. with FFA students and three school district Superintendents. This work was done in partnership with the National Forest Counties and Schools Coalition. - Supported local fire departments through funding and policy support - Stand with the natural building community and the freedom from building codes. - Would like self-certification of wildfire resiliency methods at Building permit application. - Fighting for services in historically neglected areas including KV Estates and Mineral Hot Springs - Serving as Veterans Liaison, supporting the hiring of an excellent Veterans Service Officer
Regional & State Leadership: Represent the county on: - CDOT Planning Region Board, advocating for multimodal transportation funding and beautification of Highway 285 - SLV Homeland Security Executive Board - Representing rural Colorado on the Producer Responsibility Advisory Board, holding packaging producers accountable for recycling - Tracking state legislation with county impacts and worked through CCI and CCAT to recommend amendments that serve Saguache County
Fiscal Responsibility & Strategic Planning: - Navigating critical infrastructure needs for county employees amid limited resources - Working to stabilize and strengthen public health and social services in the face of H.R. 1 and volatile federal funding - Prioritizing long-term planning over short-term fixes
Commitment to Agriculture & Water: - Deep support for agricultural families and food, fiber, and feed production - Advocating for water conservation and aquifer recovery amid megadrought and overuse - A big advocate for regenerative agriculture and farm to school - Believe that an important way to help agriculture is to add value to our raw commodities including agri-tourism
A Transparent Approach: - Regular board reports, public meetings, and community conversations - Clear communication through social media and direct dialogue - Asking residents for guidance and listening carefully
I am committed to continuing this work by showing up, being educated on the issues, courageous, guided by the residents' voice and the charge to ensure the public health, safety, and welfare of the people of Saguache County.
Together, we can build a Saguache County that is resilient, equitable, and prepared for the future—rooted in our values, guided by data, and shaped by the people who call this place home.
